Another local knitwear designer has created a series of festive designs which will raise funds for our project. They are a set of decorative carol singers and you can find out more on her blog here:

They are super cute and proceeds from now until March 2012 will go towards our project.

Steak sales and Bottle drives

We are super excited about our latest fundraiser - a case of 24, 5oz AAA Top Siirloin steaks for only $80?!? If you get your order into us by 12th December, they will be available in time for Christmas (21st December)!! This is a fantastic opportunity to stock up for the holidays - tell all your friends and colleagues! Email us on trainparkproject@shaw.ca for more details or with your order!

We had such a great response to our first bottle drive, that we are planning to run a few more over the winter months. The first of these will take place on Saturday December 10th from 10am. Please leave your bottles out with a note saying they are for the Train Park Project if you want to help us with this intiative.

We are still in the Aviva Community fund competition, so please keep voting every day to help us win all the funding we would need for the park.

Thanks for all your support!!

News and events

First some news updates:

Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in our bid to win the $25,000 grant from The Keg Steakhouse in their Thanks a Million campaign. It was a close race, but we lost out in the end. Thanks to everyone who helped us by voting - we really appreciated your help!

The Bottle Drive raised an amazing $1261.10 (plus a bit more from some additonal donations). This includes a 5% donation from the Bottle Depot for helping to pre-sort the bottles. This is a fantastic response from our neighbourhood and we wish to say a big THANK YOU to eveyone who donated to that.

Lastly - we will have a table at the McKenzie Frenzie today - please come over and say hello. We will have the pictures up of the new playground plans for you to take a look at again. You can sign up to help in our fundraising activities, ask questions about the project so far and we'd love to hear your ideas to help us make this new play park a reality. See you there!

Bottle Drive and Hot Dog Sale update

THANK YOU to everyone who supported our Bottle Drive and Hot Dog sale today - we were totally blown away by the support from our friends and neighbours. We collected so many bottles - it was such a boost for our project! We'll update you on the total amount we raised a little later in the week.

The Hot Dog sale raised over 300 bucks - which is GREAT!! A BIG THANK YOU to all who turned up - in spite of the weather. We are so amazed to have such enthusiastic support in our community - this really gives us a boost!!

Finally - a reminder about The Keg Steakhouse grant program - there are only a few days left to vote, so please keep voting every day - winning the $25,000 would be fantastic!! You can track our progress every time you go to vote.... thanks for your help!

Knitting design sales generate funds for the project

A local knitting designer has created a pattern which she is selling to raise funds for the project. All proceeds from the pattern sales from now until 30th September 2011 will be donated to the project.

The design is a bias knit cowl pattern using a worsted weight yarn, although the pattern includes instructions to allow other yarn weights to be used. It is called "With Teeth" because of the zig-zag edging at the top and bottom of the design!. It is a quick knit and needs a little knitting experience to complete it. Knowledge of provisional cast-ons and grafting is required!

As you can see from the picture, its pretty cute so if you knit or know someone who knits, this could make a great gift and it helps the project out too. The pattern costs C$5.00 and includes instructions for the cowl, directions for adjusting the size and instructions for a softer, more drapey version as well.

The pattern is for sale through a website called Ravelry, but if you are not a member of that site, you can buy with Paypal by clicking the button here:

The finished design will be modelled at the Hot Dog sale on Saturday (after the bottle drive) - if you need any more incentive to buy!!!

Thanks for looking!!

AND KEEP VOTING ON THE KEG WEBSITE!!! ;o)

Lets get started on the fundraising!!

We have our first fundraising event! We will start with a BOTTLE DRIVE on Saturday June 11th, so please start saving your bottles for collection that morning.
We'll need volunteers to help collect, so this could be time to get the kids involved and if you have a truck available, it would make transporting the bottles to the depot much easier. If you can help us out, please contact us via the email address on the orange flyer.

Oh - and a "heads up" for a grant application that we submitted recently - if we get through to the next round, we will need your help to VOTE to get the funding. PLEASE check back here next Monday to see how we got on and for further details!

A Great Start!!

A big thank you to everyone who came out to the community meeting, asked questions, volunteered or sent messages. We are thrilled with the level of interest and enthusiasm. We still need your input for funding ideas at ground level and from your corporate contacts, so please let us know your ideas.

We hope to be adding the pictures of the play park proposals here soon.

Thanks and watch this space!

Record of the state of the Park at the start of the project

This post aims to show the state of the play park at the beginning of the project and give us something to look back on at the end with satisfaction on the progress we have made!!

The Train - which is now no longer in the park!

Drainage issues under the swing set.

Leaning station structures.

Muddy puddles under the swing set.

The small "wobbler" train, which doesn't wobble any more.

Hopefully this will give us some incentive to get some new play structures in our Train park!

Don't forget the community meeting in the park this Wednesday (May 4th) evening at 7pm - come along and see the initial ideas for the areas and find out how you can help. See you there!

Train Park Project's first community meeting!

We will hold a community meeting on Wednesday May 4th at 7:00pm in the park (if the weather makes this impossible, we will move to an adjacent garage) to explain what has happened so far, what we are hoping to accomplish in the future, and how you can help!!! Please come out and find out what is going on at the park!! It’s not only a great place for our kids to grow, but it will also help with our property values…

Don't forget, you can also find us in Facebook: Train Park Rejuvenation Project

Introducing the Train Park Rejuvenation project....

We are putting together a plan for the rejuvenation of the park between Mount Selkirk Close and Mount Brewster Circle. This park is locally known as the Train Park, due to the type of play structures it currently has. The park is 15 years old and in dire need of improvement. The City of Calgary has been forthcoming in the fact that there is no budget for this project, but has offered to assist our group in getting the work done if we can get the funding in place. This is a superb opportunity for our community to come together and turn a dilapidated, and potentially unsafe park into a great place for our kids to grow and play.
We will be updating this blog with dates for your diary, news and developments, so please visit often. You can become a follower or subscribe by email to be kept up-to-date.

It is also a place for you to add your comments and suggestions - but please be mindful of what you post - we will be moderating this site!
